My Firsts for the Year

The above was my first of the year. I was stuck in downtown Corvallis for a few hours on Saturday, and this little guy offered himself up from the mulch in front of a relatively new business, a whole block away from the Allan Bros.

C'est une fleur de saison...

The find today on the river in Willamette Park was a surprise! Twenty-two mushrooms all in a small area on the disturbed root-zone of a fallen cottonwood. The pictures are quite large, if you click on the last one to view it full size, you will be able to see how many there are in such a tight area.

They seemed to be in great shape; only a couple had burnt tops, and they didn't seem to have suffered much from the most recent rains.

I didn't see ONE Verpa bohemica or conica... Hmmmm.

This is only the second time I've found more than one or two blacks in a riparian zone with cottonwoods.

Seems like it was perfect timing!

COW, that's some serious porn you're pushing in our faces there. How many morels are visible in the last pic? I think I counted around a dozen. Sick! Next you need to tell us what you made with 'em. If it was me, I think I'd batter and fry a few halves as a nod to my midwestern morel brothers and sisters, then saute the rest for a cream sauce over local grass-fed cow. But that's me...

Hey COW, This is StacyKA from CMS. I counted 16 nice morels. I must say that your blog has some very good info. I've become very accustomed to seeing good articles followed by your name. Great job as usual. How were the morels?? I haven't gone out looking as of late. I've had some illness in my close family that has kept me home. But, I plan on getting out tomorrow and Friday. Good pickin' to you. Have all the luck this year, you deserve it.

COW, I just swiped yr mulch morel image for a post about the toxicity of "edible" mushrooms, a la the discussion we've been having at CMS. Hope that's okay.

Perfectly fine with me, bro, encouraged even. Now I need to go check out your post...

As for what I made with them... I'm a simple man, and recipes are in and of themselves almost too haughty for me...

This is what I do frequently, tho:

Rinse. Tear into small pieces. Sautee until moisture mostly gone, then add butter. When the texture is "right", after about 20 minutes at medium-low temps, I crank it up a bit, sprinkle salt, sucanat and shoyu to taste. I finish them in just a couple of minutes on "sear"... Reduce heat, add dairy. Sour cream, soft cheeses, cream, raw milk, etc... reduce for a bit. My impatience always leads me to thickening with a bit of flour or starch... properly thickened, this sauce is ready for pasta, qinoa, rice, crepes or whatever...

I think I can only count 15 in the picture, but I commend you, Stacy, for seeing one more than I can... it certainly is a test!

After having given up oil in general, due to omega-3 vs. omega-6 concerns, I pretty much use butter for everything, and I haven't yet decided how I'm going to fry stuff... I guess I'll have to gheek out soon enough - fried morels are the #%#*!
